I've been reading this book for a couple of months to my 3rd grader for our homeschool and if you ask him today what his favorite subject is, he'll quickly say history! I also recommend using the activity book and doing the extra recommended reading at least one day a week. A lot of the recommended reading books can easily be found at your public library. My other children used different books and text for history and they thought it was boring. This books blows them all away. Even my high schoolers will read a few sections to supplement their study of the same time period on occasion.

I can easily see why What Do You Do With a Tail Like This? is a Caldecott Honor Book. The cut-paper collage of animals is very artistic, and the way the book is written is very creative. A small portion of five animal parts (either noses, ears, tails, eyes, mouths, or feet) are shown, and you are to guess which animal the part belongs to and how it is used. Even if your children can easily figure out and memorize what they are looking at, I think they can have fun with this book for a long time. There is a good chance that some of the 30 animals in the book will be uncommon to you. Some of the animals found in Jenkins' and Page's book include the African elephant, striped skunk, blue-footed booby and giant anteater. In the back of the book you can find out more interesting facts about the animals. You and your kids will definitely gain from reading this book. I highly recommend it.

Who isn't a fan of Dr. Seuss? We aren't talking about the live-action movies but the books full of bizarre rhyming and rhythm.

The good doctor is in full swing with ABC: An Amazing Alphabet Book.

Each letter begins with the same cadence: "Big A, little a, what begins with a?" followed by some goofy wordsmithing: "Aunt Annie's Alligator".

My son enjoys looking at the pictures and hearing me go through the cadence.

My older niece, however, got into the recitation and knew what was coming next so that by the time I was on G, she said with me, "Big G, little g, what begins with g?"

Your kids will enjoy the colorful pictures of the Seussian creatures and giggle at things like the "fiffer feffer feff".

I first saw the Travel Book in a secured Alzheimer's care unit and noted that the patients loved turning the pages and viewing the beautiful pictures. Some of them had traveled extensively and the book triggered memories and spawned conversation. I purchased one for my mother, who lives in assisted living because of her severe memory loss. I originally was skeptical about reading this series because I heard that it was a mixture of fantasy and science fiction, and those aren't my favorite genres. However,when my sister brought it back from the library I decided to try it. I literally couldn't put it down! The story was well written, it was very funny, and it was much better than the average dime-a-dozen fantasy or science fiction novel. I haven't yet read the first two but I will shortly hopefully, along with the later ones too, of course! I wholeheartedly give this book five stars. My only regret is that I didn't read Artemis Fowl and The Arctic Incident first.

My daughter adores Dora, so getting a little "explorer" help for potty training was a great idea for us. Although my daughter had trouble pressing the button on her own, she loved having me help her make the flushing sound. This book also worked well for us because we did use a potty seat that fit directly onto the toilet (my daughter is tall for her age). It took my daughter a little longer to perfect potty training than it did Dora, but this book was definitely a fun way to help her on her way. Now my girl is well on her way to being a big girl explorer too!

Let me start off by saying that I am a fervent cookbook collector AND a very active home cook/ baker. I have made many of the recipes in this book and they've all gotten raves. I was even able to substitute a bit in such ways as using soy cream instead of dairy cream, and the recipes still work!
The book doesn't have pictures, which I know annoys some, but I actually prefer it that way because that way there's more room for recipes. I also enjoy the "theme and variations" format because I'm always on the lookout for nifty ways to change up a recipe. I know some people are complaining about the variations because they're often simple, but personally I think it's nice to be reminded of all the small, subtle ways we can change recipes and create amazing flavor combinations.

I found this book through a link from Dr. Li's work on Angiogenesis. Even though not a clinician, reading it showed a correlation between the two's approaches.

The list of recommended ingredients for one's pantry includes some that may be challenging to find.

The book for a non-clinician seems a bit of a challenge to comprehend, but I'm not sure you need to understand all of the nitty gritty to gain value from reading it. But the real benefit would come from a disciplined commitment to use Dr. LaPuma's eight-week regimen as a behavior changing strategy. I don't see how picking and choosing specific ideas to embrace will have much benefit in the long run.

Having said that, there are a number of recipes that look really interesting. We're looking forward to experimenting with them when we're in a position to do so. Many of his suggestions for preparing meals quickly using off-the-shelf products are also attractive.

If you subscribe to the theory that any improvement is an improvement, I believe it would be possible to get value from a casual study of Dr. LaPuma's approach. Nevertheless, I suspect that real value will come a full blown immersion into it. It's worth checking out.

I have a number of friends who are librarians, most of them work at universities. I have another friend who, after taking a temp job at the Library of Congress in D.C., went back to school to get his Masters and be a librarian. It's because of him that this book caught my eye. I'm not a librarian myself, but my day-to-day job involves a lot of research and the occasional trip to brick-and-mortar libraries for periodicals, access to Lexus Nexus or any number of things the internet or my own personal references can't provide.

If you didn't already have a deep abiding affection for librarians I think this book will engender one in you.

Well most of the book will anyway. As you get towards the end, things get a little dicey. I'm a total techno-nerd, but the chapter on librarians in Second Life might lose somebody who doesn't get "sandbox" games or MMO's. But then again, when I was a kid, there were people who didn't get "card catalogs" and the librarian was there to help them. The point is, the Librarians are there to get the content into the hands of people who want and/or need it (except where it violates somebody's privacy or Civil Rights of course). In this day an age there are many ways to do that and new challenges that come with them. This book celebrates the conventional and unconventional aspects of what could become, an might already be in some places, an endangered but important profession.

There is a lot of easily understood information in this book and a lot of great philosophy underneath the content. Knox's fine Classical Literature really deserves four and a half stars; I just can't figure out how to put on that extra half a star. Truly, this is a superb piece of editing-- Knox has chosen wisely , including well-known classical works, Homer, Aeschylus, Euripides, as well as more obscure works. The book runs the whole gamut of Greek and Roman literature, giving a tantalizing taste of each. Often the lesser-known works are the most interesting. I was fascinated. Knox also gives details about the lives and times of the authors that are interesting and engaging. Also, I appreciated Knox's interest in providing the most reader-friendly versions of the pieces. Sometimes he alternates translators to show how different people have read the great works, and in some cases, Propertius in particular, he offers great literary translations (such as one by Ezra Pound) alongside a more faithful translation. There is so much to say for this book. You will want to read more. There is one cause for frustration though, and that is in Knox's approach to giving liner notes. He gives all notes up-front in the introduction to each piece where a footnote or endnote might have been more convenient to the reader-- they must go back to the intro if they've forgotten what something meant. Other than smoe confusion with editorial notes, this book is wonderful and well worth your time.

I can't be the only Mom that gets frustrated by this. I go to buy early reading books and encounter ONLY TV- and movie- marketed characters in the books. I would like better choices.

Anyway, Balto was the only Step-3 book in the store that did NOT have a Princess or SpongeBob on the cover, so we got it. I expected to get some flack from the child who is afraid of dogs, but even he liked it fairly well.

Balto is a sled dog in 1925 who participates in a relay. The purpose is to bring medicine to an Alaskan town with a diphtheria epidemic, carrying it through a driving blizzard and terrible conditions. Balto had the second-to-last leg of the relay, but when it was time to hand off to another team, the other team was not there. So Balto and his team kept going. Since he was the dog who made it into town with the medicine, he got the credit for the whole adventure! We talked about the other dog teams and drivers who had to come through the deep snow, and how all those teams working together got the job done.

Here is what the first grader liked best about the story (his words):
+ There is a map. Maps are good.
+ The dog kept going.
+ The doctor helped the sick children.
+ I like the picture of the statue of Balto.
+ Balto was a hero.

Here is what the Mom liked in the story:
+ It would have been easy to quit, but the driver and his sled team kept going, despite miserable conditions.
+ The words were just challenging enough.

As far as reading levels go, I would say level 3 is a pretty good judgment. My son was reading phonics readers and step 1 readers over the summer, and his confidence is building. This book did not frustrate him, but it took him a while to sound out some of the words. I had to help with the names of some towns and complicated words (Anchorage, diphtheria). The rest, he did himself.

Very good historical fiction book centered around three women (two black maids and one privileged white woman) in civil rights era Mississippi. It was suspenseful, which kept me reading, but I never felt a true connection to the characters. The book is written in rotating first person among the 3 lead characters, except one omniscient chapter about three-quarters of the way in (really annoying, to me at least). I thought the end was a little flat too. Still, I give it 4 stars because it kept me wanting more.

Here we have the ninth book in the series. I have read this book at least twice before. We diverged with Perrin in a extraneous quest but he needed something to balance all the fun Mat seems to be having.

Thus we run square into the problem that Jordan has created, too many streams. The entire discussion during this reread is where can this series end, for it was a trilogy.

After the series achieved success others will show how Jordan purports to have thousands of pages on the history of the world. That is all well and good, but back when the story was only going to be a trilogy, you wouldn't need to create so much unless you were sure you were going to be paid for it. Before WoT, Jordan was not all that well published. Conan books, and not as memorable as the items published much earlier by those who expanded on Howard's iconic barbarian hero.

But now as a writer making money. Probably very good money, why not take the time to step back and create a mega opus. Bigger then Tolkien who is regard as the God of Fantasy.

Why not write so many character sketches that you can fill rooms with them. That may make the world richer, but it sets up problems. Winter's Heart fails though not as badly as the previous transition book. The failure is having so many story lines that justice is not done to any of them.

Further the time scale is again destroyed, where earlier books almost a year will pass in the telling, now it is weeks, and our heroes can accomplish what used to take them months. One has to remember that they are novices at there jobs of magic casters, or rulers, or battle leaders despite what memories may be inside their head.

Those of you who aren't twenty, how many really know that it does take years to have the wisdom to read people. To analyze the interactions of your environment quickly and correctly. If every twenty year old could do it (And there are several in Jordan's world who can.) Then what need of older people. Surely everyone over twenty-five are idiots...

In the Music Man, "The older-but wiser girl for me..." (It was on last night) and that is highlighted everytime a Wise One or Aes Sedai of years of experience is bossed around by one of the children. Sure they need to be heroic, but elders need to help them manage, not jump to every order.

So again do you read this book. Well it is better than the previous for stories, though shortened, do complete. But once again Jordan is stretching out his trilogy beyond all reason.

The story by Marian and the Illustrations by Tibor Gergely in this edition are great. The text is quite readable and the pictures eye catching. The theme of the story "too help" is quite universal and no worse for the wear. This is a nice additon to any childern's library. Recommend this one highly.

NOTE: The original version of "The Secret of the Old Clock" was written in 1930 and was 210 pages long, but the book I am reviewing is the rewritten version from 1959, and is only 180 pages long, including illustrations.

This book is first in the standard "yellow hardcover" Nancy Drew series, and is definitely one of the better books in the series, suitable to capture the attention of new readers and invite them into this classic world in which any criminal or fraudulent activities become targeted by the relentless teen sleuth!

The standard "yellow hardcover" series generally has three types of books, and this volume is of type number 2:

1. Totally new stories written and published between 1957 and the early 1980s. Most of the yellow books that fall into this category are not that great (for example, Mystery of the Moss-Covered Mansion). Instead of keeping focused on mystery and adventure, they tend to pause the story to include "educational material," and they tend to have over-complicated plots with too many characters that have very little to distinguish them from each other. They feel quite artificial in design and have a bland tone focused more on Nancy's perpetual schedule of appointments, with the mystery often dragged out over a matter of weeks because of trivial obstacles and distractions and runs of "bad luck." Try to identify which books were written in this fashion, and avoid them until you've read all those that were written in the other two styles. The original stories tended to all be much better than these re-writes, although a few of these new stories did turn out okay. One hint to identify which books were these weaker ones is that they were usually written in the late 1960s or early-mid 1970s, and the artwork is often inferior to that contained in the other volumes. Since some decent stories were also written during that same time period, a second hint is that the volumes that were originally written in the 1930s to early 1940s tended not to fare very well in their "yellow edition" re-writes - these primarily include many of the volumes numbered in the teens, but also apply to the majority of new volumes numbered in the late 30s to the early 50s. For example, "The Secret of the Golden Pavilion," which starts okay and then drags out into mediocrity. These types of books are usually readable, but are much slower-going and less interesting than the other two types of stories, described below. New readers may find them okay, but seasoned readers will feel at least a bit of disappointment.

2. Rewritten versions of the old, original stories that were first published in 1930. These types of stories (mostly those re-written before 1965) tend to be pretty good, retaining the ideas of the original novels, but in an updated form that is set in the latter half of the 20th Century rather than the first half of it. They are pretty fun books, even though the writing style is not as moody and detailed as the original, longer versions. Many of the books in this style keep the focus on adventure and mystery, sometimes including long action scenes (such as chases, suspenseful investigations, stakeouts, and faceoffs with criminals in perilous circumstances). These books keep the flavor of what made these stories good. The mystery is usually solved within a week or less, with memorable, swift-moving action and moodiness. The centerpiece of "The Secret of the Old Clock" is when Nancy finds and pursues criminals while looking for a vital clue that will restore swindled property back into the hands of its deserving owners, and this adventure scene moves along for dozens of pages without a break in the suspense, just as the original book had. This style of storytelling is much better than the newer "type 1" stories in which a brief, contrived-feeling event happens at the end of each chapter, only to be resolved quickly on the very next page. (That kind of storytelling was not very memorable.) "The Secret of the Old Clock" starts the "yellow hardcover" series very well, and this good start continues in volumes #2, 3, 6, 7, and 9 in a similar style of memorable storytelling that is faithful to the originals despite being shortened markedly. Those 6 books should probably be read first, and contain some of the best stories in the "yellow hardcover" series. The artwork tends to be quite good, as well!

3. Edited, shorter versions of the original stories that were published from the early 1930s until 1956. These are usually pretty good as well, so long as the original story was of good quality. Examples include "Clue in the Crumbling Wall" and "The Ghost of Blackwood Hall." This style usually covers those books that were originally published from the late 1940s and early 1950s that were re-released with mere editing instead of re-writing, and so these books often retain the flavor of the original stories quite well. These tend to be the volumes numbered in the 20s and early 30s. The quality of the artwork varies from good to fair, but since it's the story that counts, these stories are usually a good bet.

I love this sticker book. Now, I'm trying to find sticker books for everything. My 3 year old that didn't seem ready for learning is loving this book and can't get enough of it. She wants to do it every day. I took out the sticker pages so she could look at it more closely. This book doesn't have anything bad in it. I always have trouble with ABC books containing things like U for unicorn and M for monster which we don't want for our children. This is excellent. My 8 year old that I also homeschool loves baby stuff more than her own work. I'm looking for something more her age that has sticker activities. I'm looking for maybe map stickers or reptile, amphibian classification stickers. This is GREAT! But I'm not that picky, I just want my kids to love learning because I plan on homeschooling all of them.

Not as good as the first...but oh my it's still a 5 Star!!!

I know now that I'm in trouble with this series...how in the world am I going to be able to read anything else now that I've started?! I'll try to make myself quit after the next one in line because I don't want to burn myself out...but HOW will I do it?!

The only concerns I have...and I mean the only (at this point) is...Is Roarke going to continue to be the suspect in every case AND where do Roarke and Eve go from here? I mean I still have 30 books left to read in this series. I'm guessing she's going to break them up a couple times or put someone else between them. That has to be what happens. If they get married now then by the time the series is over they'll be an old married couple (and really how much fun would that be to read about)....But I can't wait to find out!

If you haven't started this series yet...then beware...you better have a few on hand b/c I promise 1 (or 2 or 3 or 4 or 5) at a time will never be enough!

I almost didn't finish this book. The first half of the book you deal with Kitty whining all of the time and being spineless. She always seemed to coward behind the men in the wolf pack and took no stand for herself and acted, well, girlie. I was thinking that she was going to be a kick ass werewolf. But that is not the case in the first half of the book.

Saying this, I loved the book. Weird, right? The second half of the book picked up and had tons of action and Kitty finally starts to take control and be the bad ass wolf that I wanted her to be in the beginning.

The book starts off with Kitty at her job at a radio station. She ends up taking a midnight shift filling in for someone, only to take the show and turn it to werewolves and vampires. The show gets such a huge audience that Kitty gets her own show every week. Finally the truth comes out about what she really is and a man named Cormac comes to the radio station to kill Kitty. Which Kitty later finds out is tipped off by someone from her own pack.

I really enjoyed this part of the book, I liked how the book read like you were listening to the radio show. And I also really enjoyed Kitty and Cormac's relationship as the book kept going. I am hoping that there is more of him in the next book.

Not sure what the next book holds since Kitty is now traveling. But even though this book started off bad at the beginning I still give it a 5 out of 5 because I loved the second half and can't wait to read book 2!

About a year and a half, ago my daughter and I decided to start a Mother-Daughter book club with some of our friends. It has been a wonderful experience for me because I have had the opportunity to read books with my daughter and hear her thoughts. I also think it's been a great experience for my daughter because she is learning to delve a little deeper into books, and she is also getting much better at expressing her ideas. Needless to say, we are very passionate about our Mother-Daughter book club!

Now given that I am pretty involved in our mother-daughter book club and I read a lot of middle grade books because I have a daughter in that age range, I have no idea why I hadn't read THE MOTHER-DAUGHTER BOOK CLUB by Heather Vogel Frederick. This book is absolutely perfect for my daughter and me (and our book group.) I am so glad that I finally did because I was sure missing out on a wonderful middle grade book. I absolutely loved this book and its characters!

THE MOTHER -DAUGHTER BOOK CLUB tells the story of four young girls whose mothers (and one father) decide to start a mother-daughter book club. Since girls will be girls, there are many misunderstandings and mishaps (some intentional) along the way. I don't think I will ever get used to how catty girls can be to each other! The story is told from each of the girl's perspectives in alternating chapters. I loved that the author wrote the book this way because it allowed me to understand and appreciate each of the four girls. And, I have no doubt that young girls will definitely relate to at least one of the characters.

Another thing I really liked about this story was that it followed a mother-daughter book club. I loved getting some insight into another book group (even if it was fictional) and seeing how their meetings were held. Our group reads a different book each month, but the club in the story decided to read LITTLE WOMEN over the course of an entire school year. (I happen to love this idea, but I'm not sure it would fly in our group.) I really appreciated how the author incorporated the story and characters of LITTLE WOMEN into the book. The book takes place in the town where Louisa May Alcott lived; and the girls not only visit her home, but they also dress as their favorite character. After reading THE MOTHER-DAUGHTER BOOK CLUB, my daughter and I both are ready to read LITTLE WOMEN!

I enjoyed this book so much that I didn't want it to end -- I still think these girls have a lot more stories in them. I was very happy to learn that THE MOTHER-DAUGHTER BOOK CLUB is the first book in a series. Two more books are available -- MUCH ADO ABOUT ANNE (the girls read and discuss ANNE OF GREEN GABLES) and the recently released DEAR PEN PAL (the girls read DADDY-LONG-LEGS.) I can't wait to read these two books too!

THE MOTHER-DAUGHTER BOOK CLUB is ideal for young girls because it deals with many of the same issues that they face everyday -- peer pressure, mother/daughter relationships, jealousy, insecurity, etc. I was so excited to find that there is a reading guide available in the back of the paperback version. There is also a section on recommended future reading and a worksheet to help the girls come up with some of their personal goals. And since book club wouldn't be complete without yummy food, the author has included some recipes of snacks that they girls in the book served at their own meetings. I really do think this book is ideal for mother-daughter book clubs, and I can't recommend it enough!

Fairly satisfying. I know that after reading the first book in this series, Secrets of a Summer Night, I really looked forward to reading Westcliff and Lillian's love story. Happily I was not disapointed.

Now that the first wallflower, Annabel, is happily married, attention turns to Lillian. She's irreverent, ill-manered, and opinionated, she is the last woman that Marcus Westcliff would consider for a wife. He's an earl possessing a very old and prestigious title, and he's grown up under parents who are demanding and bordering on abusive. As a result, he's overly self-assured, stubborn, and commanding.

The romance is very good. I love the opposites attract thing. I enjoyed Lillian as a character--she is someone a modern woman can relate to. Westcliff unfortunately comes off as a bit generic, but I believe this is mostly because the author chooses to focus more on Lillian and her conflictedness. Also, this one was somewhat lacking in actual action--it's mostly dialogue based. Still, it is definately a well recommended book--thorough plot, rich setting, and wonderful characters.

This is a great retelling of an old classic, with colorful illustrations. My 4 year old daughter loves it, and can even read some of it herself. I highly recommend this book if you are looking to share the classics with your child.

If by chance you don't know much about this timeless story, it is about a young girl named Goldilocks (named Silver-Hair in the original version) who snooped around in a home when nobody was there. This house belonged to three bears: a father bear, a mother bear and a little bear. The girl ended up eating a bowl of porridge, breaking a chair and sleeping in the little bear's bed. When the bears come home, they quickly realize that somebody had been in their house; when they go into the bedroom, they find the girl. She doesn't get eaten.

The book is cute, and definitely appropriate for its age group. I hope you give it a try.

I was born a Christian. Ever since I was about 15 I was a true believer in spirituality rather than Christianity, but I do believe in an omnipotent God.

What do I believe about the Book of Enoch? In Genesis of the Bible it says Enoch walked with God for 300 years. In this time he wrote what is called an apocryphal text (one that was strickened from the bible).

Much like the Bible, the Book of Enoch can be interpreted in multiple ways. Looking on it as my current status, I believe it was a book of Extra Terrestrials and poor ol' Enoch didn't know what he was experiencing due to his lack of technology, hence why he thought these beings were Gods...
BUT
Looking on it from my prior Christian view, I can totally understand why anyone who is a fullhearted Jew or Christian would accept this wonderfully written text as fact.

Regardless of how I see this book, I must say that if you are looking for the same psychedelic experiences as in the Holy Bible Genesis through Revelations, grab this easy to read apocryphal text immediately. There is talk of beings being cast into darkness forever, sheep that write books, and even multiple lords, for example there is a lord of sheep (I thought there was only one lord...but you will find out thats not the case as God actually gives up his throne for a brief hiatus).

This is a great book! Sadly it is the last great one in the DT series. So my warning to fans of The Dark Tower books is this: DONT read books 4-7! You will be horrified at what King does to the wonderful charachters and world that he has created. But if you must continue the story after 3 then go ahead and read 4. It really isn't that bad but it's sure is no match for 1-3. 5-7 is complete garbage and should have never been written or published.

The Waste Lands is my favourite in the series. I love the plot and the cool stuff that Roland and his "ka tet" find along their journey.
it really is a great addition to the DTs. But once again 4-7 will only dissapoint. Some things are better left unfinished. Mr. King should have relized that when he decided to (SPOILER) put in Harry Potter snitches, lightsabers, and the most annoying way of talking ever in book 5.

This epic series had such momentum and it really is a shame at what happens to the quality of the story in 4-7. So please please please don't read them!!!!

Then i went to the head yook and he told his people to make me a machine that can shoot 3 rocks at once. After they made it i brang it to the wall and when i got there the zooks had the same one as me. So i kept going back to the head yook to build better machines then them but no matter how hard i tried the zooks always had the same one as me.then we both gave up and built the wall to the highest it can go and decided to stay away from each other.

Jorge el curiosos is a great series. I have yet to find a mistake in translation, and the vocabulary is simple enough for my youngest students, and yet my oldest ones still are challenged as they practice the grammar tense changes between the imperfect and preterite tense.

so this book is a great way to learn about tibetan buddhism. the first half sums up the vajrayana tradition. the second half is about death and what happens after you die. very well written and inspiring. it gets only four stars because the writer seems to ramble at points and get lost telling stories about his past. they are good stories but seem to get kind of off track sometimes; like if you and i were talking and i was explaining how to properly sew a patch onto a hat and kept stopping to tell you stories about people i knew in the past who also sewed hats. i was really feeling that the author sounded deeply peaceful and full of wisdom. at one point he says he is not enlightened in so many words and i was taken aback as most buddhist authors will not just blatantly say this. later i read that he had a law suit filed on him for using his position to get his female followers into bed. this may be why he knows so much about the path but is not enlightened lol! anyway the bottom line is that it's a great book but it's hard to listen to someone preach about being a pure and good person to get rid of bad karma and reach enlightenment or recognize ones' true nature at death who you know for a fact is a messed up person who has caused much suffering. so yeah it's good but kind of hypocritical.

I am reminded of the little book store owner in "You've Got Mail." Kathleen "Shopgirl" Kelly (played by Meg Ryan) knows all of the wonderful, imaginative, classic children's books for children to read; while Joe "NY152" Fox (played by Tom Hanks just wants to build a conglomerate book store down the street and sell whatever his buyers stock in it. His staff knows no more about the books on the shelves than the shoppers!

That, and the quotes that he puts in his Part Separators and his storytelling manner telegraph his strong commitment to telling Larsson's truth about men's violence against women. There are even rumors, not yet backed up by any evidence, that he was murdered for his political beliefs.

What intrigues me is the canny way he was able to manage Point of View, the subject I've been teaching this summer. Technically, the book is an extended argument for large omniscient narration. We dip into key character's heads only long enough to establish their motivation and quickly move to another character. The novel's obvious protagonist is Mikael Blomkvist, but the reader doesn't stay with him long enough to make it "his book." Blomkvist has a passivity that, while it may make him suspect to American audiences, works to the overall advantage of the book and Larsson's sweeping vision. In a book filled with manipulative controlling men, Blomkvist has the knack of lying low and letting the world come to him.

Larsson's cleverest nuance might be related to Salander, the novel's second protagonist, the strong female with the dragon tattoo. In a separate character-developing subplot, Salander violently turns the tables on a man who rapes her. Salander plays a major role in the major plot as well, using her hacker-investigator skills to assist Blomkvist solve the central mystery of the novel. Half Blomkvist's age, but fully his equal or superior as an investigator, Salander falls for Blomkvist, and hard. She is one of several strong female characters with whom Blomkvist metaphorically dances for the length of the novel. Sexually, they come to him, which allows Larsson the space to weave his tale with no neediness on the part of his protagonist. This fits with his theme, which seems to be that women can do wonders on their own if they're not subordinated, through trickery and even violence, by men. It works.

About the Journal - Very nice. Has a magnetic flap to keep it closed and also a nice red ribbon bookmark. Inspirational quotes throughout. A good place to keep your thoughts on gratitude, I think.

Any "blank book" would work here, but this is something a little nicer, in my opinion. If you're going for abundance, go all out with nice things to keep your thoughts in! :) This small step will help you to create abundance in your life.

How I Use It - I am a big fan of the "Artist's Way" book and one of the things suggested in that book is to write every morning. I have found doing that with this book is an excellent way to start my day. It really gets me off on the right foot. It's also a great morning routine, which gives me a little "space" in the morning, so I am not feeling so rushed.

If you make it a daily habit, you will find the process effortless. Well worth the time investment.

The Going to Bed Book is my son's favorite book by Sandra Boynton. I received it at a baby shower before he was even born. I've been reading it to him aloud since he was a tiny infant. Now he's two, and we love to read it together.

Besides fun illustrations and a cute, simple story, this book has great connections for babies and toddlers at "going to bed time." The animals take a bath, hang their towels on the wall, find pajamas big and small, brush their teeth, and then exercise! Tired out, they go back down the stairs, say good-night, somebody turns out the light, and they rock and rock and rock to sleep.

The rhythm and pacing is perfect for getting ready for bed. My son has already taken his bath and brushed his teeth, so it's fun to see the animals do the same things as they get ready for bed. The book slows and ends with repetition, like the rhythmic rocking that we do in his glider as we read. It's a great winding-down book for the end of the day.
